Interstate 78 Pennsylvania History
Construction of the roadway between Lebanon and Lehigh counties took place between 1950 and 1970. The entire stretch of 77 miles was completed in 1989. Prior to the 1960s, Interstate 78 was routed into Route 22 through the Lehigh Valley, Allentown, Easton PA and Phillipsburg, NJ. Due to heavy traffic volume, PennDOT and NJDOT decided to construct the southern alignment whereby Interstate 78 is routed today.
